02/10/2002 Entry: "Spagetti Hoops"

Why are Spagetti Hoops one of childrens favourite meals?

I decided to give Taylor hoops for dinner the other day. We started out ok, but after a few mouthfulls, it all started to go wrong. The first mistake was letting him try and feed himself. This seemed like a good idea in my mind, but as soon as he got the soon, he decided to dance to the music, and let the hoops fly over my left shoulder, hitting the floor behind me. I took the spoon back, making a mental note not to do that again.

I then introduced Taylor to the slices of bread I had cut up to accompany his meal. He put the first one in his mouth and started to eat it, and then waved it towards the hoops. I guessed he wanted to dunk his bread in the tomato sauce. I did this for his, gave it back and the first slice of bread was consumed without incident. The second slice, he managed to dunk without me looking, as I was attempting to put the next spoon of hoops in his mouth. This slice was a little bit more covered in sauce than I had allowed the first time. He was so pleased at getting the slice past me, he threw his hands up in the air, and forgot to hold on to the bread, which flew in the air, and landed squarly on his forehead. It then proceeded to slide down to his mouth, at which point he ate it.

There is more, but it involved more sauce on more walls, and over him. Parents decide what children eat when they are this age, and I have learnt not to give him Spagetti Hoops with Tomato Sauce. I am sure I am not the only parent to have learnt this lesson, so why is hoops a favourite of children???
